Junior guard on men's basketball team is one of 11 student-athletes to take part

Canisius College students were among the more than 6,200 attendees at the 2020 Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice, the largest Catholic, Jesuit social justice gathering in the United States. Normally a face-to-face conference in Washington DC, this year's teach-in was presented in an all-virtual format because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants used a dedicated online platform to network with other attendees and to hear from internationally renowned speakers such as Fr. Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries. The teach-in was organized around the theme of prophetic resilience.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Canisius, in conjunction with the college's Athletic Department, is joining the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's (MAAC) United for Justice campaign to help further education about social justice and combat racial injustice.

A new Canisius College class of nearly 500 students is navigating college life for the first time while embracing a new normal marked by the coronavirus. The incoming class includes first-year and transfer students, and represents more than 200 high schools from 21 states and eight countries.

Two Canisius College students awarded scholarships from the Greater Buffalo Society of Professional Journalists

Canisius College student Sara F. Nicolas, from Monroe, CT, was part of a winning multinational team that competed in the "X-Culture" competition, during the spring 2020 semester. Nicolas' team was one of 28 winning teams that earned near perfect scores in the competition. A total of 975 teams competed from around the world.

The Reserve Officers' Training Corp (ROTC) program commissioned three Canisius College cadets as 2nd lieutenants in the U.S. Army, during a virtual ceremony on June 5.

Two films, produced by students in the Canisius College Video Institute, received Telly Awards. The Telly Awards is a New York City-based organization that honors outstanding local, regional and cable television commercials and programs, video and film products, and online commericals, videos and films.

Canisius College congratulates more than 1,300 students who were named to the spring 2020 Dean's List and Merit List

The Western New York Teacher Residency (WNYTR) program at Canisius College graduates its first class. Six will graduate from the master's degree program on May 13, 2020, and receive New York State certification in Childhood and Special Education (grades 1-6). Through the Canisius College Western New York Teacher Residency program, aspiring educators complete master's level coursework while building their skills under the guidance of experienced teachers and leaders in high-need schools and districts. Similar to medical school residencies, where physicians are trained in hospitals alongside practicing clinicians, residents in this program co-teach for a full year alongside skilled mentor teachers, who coach and gradually ease them into more teaching responsibilities throughout the school year.

Canisius College congratulates 14 students who received 2020-21 Western New York Prosperity Fellowships. The prestigious fellowship program identifies the most promising student talent in Western New York and immerses them in a robust educational and professional development program, with the goal of developing economic leaders within the community.

Seven members of the Canisius College Class of 2020 have committed to a year of post-graduate service work. The students will dedicate the coming year to living simply, working for social justice and serving those who live on the margins of society with such organizations as AmeriCorps and the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.

The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has selected a Canisius MBA student for its prestigious Postgraduate Technical Assistant (PTA) position, which will begin in summer 2020.

Michael Pesarchick, a junior majoring in journalism and urban studies, is this year's recipient of The Maria Scrivani '76 Journalism Fellowship. He will use the fellowship to intern at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette this summer.

The Canisius College Alumni Association will honor Abigail Hughes '20, Sarah Khan '20 and Andrew Sagun '20 with its Distinguished Senior Award at the college's Spring Honors Convocation in May. This award is conferred to students who have distinguished themselves through leadership roles and involvement with the college, and for exemplifying Jesuit ideals in all their endeavors.

A five-person team from the Canisius College Golden Griffin Fund secured first place in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Research Challenge of Western New York, held Friday, February 28 at Syracuse University. The team now advances to the Americas Regional Challenge, to be held April 20-22 in New York City.

Support is awarded to students who have completed their undergraduate course of study and been accepted into the graduate program in mental health counseling at Canisius College.

More than 30 Canisius College students named to the Accounting Honor Roll in fall 2019 semester

On January 20, a group of 25 pre-medical and pre-health students at Canisius College attended Health Justice 2020: Visions of Equity. Hosted by the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, the conference highlighted structural inequalities in health care and provided insights into the underlying causes and potential solutions. The Health Justice Conference takes place each year on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the federal holiday that celebrates the life and legacy of the American civil rights leader. In addition to the keynote and workshop sessions, Undergraduate Health Justice Scholars Awards are presented to students who have demonstrated a commitment to the health professions and racial equity in medicine. This year Hannah Kralles, Canisius Class of 2020 and a pre-med student majoring in chemistry, was presented with the award. In 2019 Rosalia Sedano, Canisius Class of 2022 and a pre-dental student majoring in biology, was given the award. Breakout sessions at this year's conference included Sickle Cell Disease and Its Inequalities, Gun Violence as a Public Health Issue, Health Justice for the Indigenous, Living Undocumented and Infant Mortality in America.
